3. Material Specifications & Rationale

  • Body & Bonnet (Cast Iron – ASTM A126 Class B):

    • Properties: Excellent machinability, good strength for non-shock services, cost-effective for general utility applications.

    • Limitation: Not suitable for thermal shock, water hammer, or highly corrosive fluids (pH <6.5 or >8.5) .

  • Seat & Disc (Bronze – C83600 / Leaded Tin Bronze):

    • Properties: “Hard Seat” design (metal-to-metal). Bronze offers excellent wear resistance, low friction against the stem, and good corrosion resistance in steam/water service.

    • Benefit: Provides a durable, long-wearing sealing surface that can withstand repeated cycling. The bronze seat is typically renewable (replaceable) .

  • Stem (Brass / Stainless Steel):

    • Properties: High tensile strength with corrosion resistance. Rising stem provides visual indication of valve position .

4. Dimensional Data (Reference)

*Note: Dimensions vary by manufacturer and pressure class. Below are typical values based on MSS SP-85 / ASME B16.10.*

Size Face-to-Face (L) Height Open (H) Handwheel Dia. (D) Bolt Circle Dia. No. of Holes
DN50 (2″) 200 mm 277 mm 180 mm 120.7 mm (4.75″) 4
DN80 (3″) 240 mm 353 mm 225 mm 152.4 mm (6.00″) 4
DN100 (4″) 290 mm 404 mm 280 mm 190.5 mm (7.50″) 8
DN150 (6″) 410 mm 533 mm 350 mm 241.3 mm (9.50″) 8
DN200 (8″) 500 mm 642 mm 450 mm 298.5 mm (11.75″) 8

5. Performance & Testing (Per API 598)

Test Medium Pressure Acceptance Criteria
Shell (Body) Test Water 1.5 x Rated Pressure No visible leakage through body/bonnet joint or walls
Seat (Seal) Test Water 1.1 x Rated Pressure Per MSS SP-61 (Class IV) / Class VI optional
Backseat Test Water / Air As required No leakage through stuffing box when valve fully open

Typical Test Pressures (Example for Class 150):

  • Shell Test: 3.0 MPa (435 psi)

  • Seat Test: 2.42 MPa (350 psi)

6. Design Features

  • Outside Screw & Yoke (OS&Y): Stem threads are outside the bonnet, protected from line fluid, allowing easy lubrication and visual position indication .

  • Bolted Bonnet: Provides easy access for maintenance and trim replacement .

  • Renewable Seat & Disc: Bronze seat ring and disc can be replaced without replacing the entire valve body .

  • Backseat Design: Allows repacking under pressure when valve is fully open .

  • Flanged Ends: Drilled per ASME B16.1 for Class 125 flanges .

7. Installation & Application Notes

  • Piping Support: Cast iron valves must be properly supported. Do not use the valve as a pipe hanger .

  • Flow Direction: Install with flow under the seat (arrow on body).

  • Avoid: Do not use in systems subject to water hammer, thermal shock, or cryogenic services .

  • For Sour Service: If H₂S is present, consult factory for alternative materials (Ductile Iron / Steel) meeting NACE MR0175 .

8. Marking & Documentation

  • Marking: Per MSS SP-25 (Size, Pressure Class, Material, Manufacturer’s Logo, Heat No.) .

  • Documents:

    • Material Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1)

    • Pressure Test Report

    • Certified Dimensional Drawing

Procurement Notes

  1. Stem Material: Please confirm stem material requirement (Brass C36000 is standard; SS410 is recommended for higher temperatures or more demanding service).

  2. Seat Leakage Class: Confirm if Class VI (bubble-tight) is required (may require soft seat insert).

  3. Gear Operation: For sizes 10″ and above, gear operator is typically mandatory .

  4. Pressure-Temperature Rating: Maximum working pressure derates per ASME B16.34 for temperatures above 120°C (248°F)
