4. Materials of Construction

Component Material
Body Cast Iron (EN-GJL-250 / BS 1452 Grade 250)
Bonnet Cast Iron (EN-GJL-250)
Wedge (Gate) Cast Iron with Bronze Seat Ring
Body Seat Ring Bronze (machined and pressed / welded into body)
Stem Stainless Steel (e.g., AISI 410 / 420 / 304)
Stem Nut High Tensile Brass / Aluminium Bronze
Gland Packing Graphite / PTFE (high temperature)
Gasket Compressed Fibre or Graphite (between body and bonnet)
Bolting / Nuts Carbon Steel / Stainless Steel (as required)
Handwheel Malleable / Ductile Iron (painted or coated)

5. Features

  • Handwheel Operation: Simple and direct manual control; suitable for most general applications.

  • Rising Stem (OS&Y): The stem rises as the valve opens, providing clear visual indication of the valve position (open or closed) without the need for an additional indicator.

  • Bronze Seated: Superior corrosion resistance and long service life in demanding fluids.

  • Metal-to-Metal Sealing: Suitable for high-temperature fluids and where rubber seals are not compatible.

  • In-Line Repairable: Packing can be replaced under pressure when the valve is fully open.

8. Handwheel Operation Details

  • Type: Solid or fabricated malleable/ductile iron handwheel

  • Finish: Painted (same as valve body) or epoxy coated

  • Operation Torque: Designed for comfortable manual operation by a single person (for sizes up to DN300). For DN350 and above, consult factory regarding operating effort.

  • Direction to Close: Typically clockwise (standard) – confirm with manufacturer if required.

9. Testing

  • Shell Test: 1.5 x PN (24 bar for PN16) for duration per EN 12266-1

  • Seat Test: 1.1 x PN (17.6 bar for PN16) with allowable leakage per Rate D (or tighter if specified)

  • Optional: High-pressure seat test, low-pressure air test, or zero-leakage resilient seat tests available on request (not applicable to metal-seated valves).

10. Notes & Selection Tips

  1. Bronze Seated: Ensure the application does not require zero-leakage bubble tight shut-off; metal seated valves have allowable leakage per ISO 5208.

  2. Cast Iron Limitations: Avoid thermal shock or rapid temperature changes; not suitable for flammable or toxic fluids without specific approval.

  3. Visual Indication: The rising stem provides direct visual indication of valve position. No separate indicator is fitted.

  4. Operation Torque: For larger sizes (above DN300), consider whether a gear operator is required for ease of use (handwheel only may require high operating torque).

  5. Flange Standard: Confirm whether BS 4504 (metric) or BS 10 (inch-based) is required.
