5. 2-Piece Trunnion Ball Valve Design Features

5.1 Body Construction

  • 2-Piece Split Body: Valve consists of main body and body connector (bonnet) joined by bolted connections .

  • Bolted Construction: Allows for easy maintenance and access to internal components .

  • Full or Reduced Bore: Available in both designs per API 6D requirements .

5.2 Trunnion Mounted Ball

  • Fixed Ball Design: Ball is supported by upper and lower trunnions (stems) with bearings, preventing ball movement under pressure .

  • Lower Operating Torque: Bearings reduce friction, making operation easier especially in high pressure classes .

  • Suitable for High Pressure/Large Size: Ideal for Class 600 and above, and sizes above NPS 4″ .

5.3 Seat Design

  • Floating Seats: Seats are spring-loaded or pressure-assisted to move and maintain contact with the ball .

  • Dual Piston / Single Piston Seats: Options for DBB (Double Block and Bleed) and DIB (Double Isolation and Bleed) configurations .

  • Soft Seat: PTFE, Nylon, PEEK for bubble-tight shut-off .

  • Metal Seat: Hardfaced (Stellite, Carbide) for high temperature and erosive services .

5.4 Stem Design

  • Anti-Blowout Stem: Integral shoulder prevents stem ejection under pressure .
