5. Structural Features & Working Principle (API 6A)

  • API 6A Compliant Design: Designed, manufactured, and tested in full compliance with API 6A specification, ensuring reliability in critical wellhead and flowline applications .

  • Angle Pattern Configuration: The 90-degree angle body design minimizes fluid turbulence and erosion caused by high-velocity, solids-laden fluids common in oil and gas production .

  • Precise Throttling / Choking Function: The valve uses a tapered needle or plug that moves linearly into a mating seat. By rotating the handwheel, the operator can precisely control the flow area, managing downstream pressure and flow rate .

  • Severe Service Trim (Erosion Resistance) : Critical sealing and throttling surfaces are overlaid with Stellite or fitted with Tungsten Carbide inserts. These materials provide exceptional resistance to erosion from sand, proppant, and high-velocity flow .

  • RTJ Flanged Connections: API 6A standard 6B or 6BX flanges with Ring-Type Joint grooves ensure a reliable metal-to-metal seal capable of containing extreme wellhead pressures .

  • Manual Actuation with Position Indication: A heavy-duty handwheel and Acme threaded stem provide mechanical advantage for operation under high differential pressure. The rising stem offers clear visual indication of valve position .

  • Backseat Capability: When fully open, the stem seals against a backseat in the bonnet, allowing packing replacement while the valve is under pressure .

6. Choke Trim Options (For Extreme Conditions)

Trim Type Application Description
Stellite Overlay General purpose throttling, moderate sand Hard alloy overlay on 17-4PH or Inconel substrate
Tungsten Carbide (Solid) Severe erosive service (high sand, fracturing) Solid tungsten carbide seat and plug for maximum erosion resistance
Ceramic Trim Extreme erosion / corrosion High-purity ceramic components for longest service life in abrasive fluids

8. Installation, Operation & Maintenance (IOM) Instructions

  1. Pre-Installation: Inspect RTJ grooves for damage. Ensure Ring Gasket material matches service (Soft Iron for general, 316L/Inconel for corrosive). Clean all surfaces .

  2. Installation: Install with flow arrow pointing downstream. For throttling applications, flow should tend to close the valve (flow under seat) for better control and stability. Support piping to avoid stress on valve flanges .

  3. RTJ Flange Make-up: Lubricate stud threads and ring gasket. Tighten nuts evenly in a crisscross pattern to the torque specified in API 6A or manufacturer’s recommendations .

  4. Operation: Rotate handwheel clockwise to close, counter-clockwise to open. Do not use excessive force or extensions to close against high differential pressure, as this may damage the seat .

  5. Packing Adjustment: If slight stem leakage occurs, packing can be adjusted by tightening the gland nuts evenly. For major repairs, the valve should be depressurized .

  6. Maintenance: API 6A valves are designed for long service life. Periodic inspection of trim for erosion is recommended in severe service. Replacement parts must be OEM-sourced to maintain API 6A compliance .
