6.1 Structural Features

6.2 Working Principle

Forged steel stop valves operate by rotating the handwheel to raise or lower the stem, causing the disc to move perpendicularly along the centerline of the seat. When the disc contacts the seat, flow is stopped; when the disc lifts, flow is allowed. Since the stem movement is parallel to the flow direction, operating torque is lower and seal face wear is minimized, providing excellent shut-off performance. The valve can also be used for flow regulation due to the proportional relationship between disc travel and flow area .

10. Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructions

10.1 Pre-Installation

  • Remove protective covers from valve ends, clean interior of any debris

  • Verify valve model, pressure class, and material match service requirements

  • Check stem operation for smoothness, ensure handwheel direction indicators are clear

  • Inspect butt weld end bevels for any damage

10.2 Installation

  • Ensure pipeline is clean, free from weld slag, scale, and debris

  • Valve can be installed in any orientation, but handwheel vertical or horizontal is recommended

  • When butt welding to pipeline, follow approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS); perform post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) if required

  • Perform NDT on welds after welding to ensure quality

  • For cryogenic service, ensure proper insulation and extension bonnet orientation

10.3 Operation

  • Opening: Turn handwheel counterclockwise, stem rises, medium flows

  • Closing: Turn handwheel clockwise, stem lowers, disc contacts seat to shut off medium

  • Do not use extensions or impact tools to over-torque valve closing

  • For large bore or high-pressure valves with bypass, open bypass first to equalize pressure

  • For flow regulation, adjust handwheel to desired position (valve is suitable for throttling)

10.4 Maintenance

  • Packing Adjustment: If slight stem leakage occurs, evenly tighten gland nuts; do not over-tighten

  • Packing Replacement: With valve fully open, utilize backseat to isolate medium, allowing online packing replacement

  • Regular Operation: For valves not in regular service, operate monthly to prevent sticking

  • Seat Refurbishment: If sealing surfaces are damaged, re-hardface with Stellite and grind/lap as required

  • Cryogenic Service: Special attention to thermal cycles and material compatibility
